Regulating Artificial Intelligence in Africa

The African Union’s Continental AI Strategy, endorsed in July 2024 in Accra, focuses on a people-centric approach with five priority areas for ethical, responsible, and equitable development of AI.

Countries like Kenya and Ghana have established national strategies and task forces (starting 2018) to align their digital ecosystems, improve infrastructure, and guide private-sector AI innovation with safeguards.

Challenges remain around inclusiveness, enforcement, and local capacity building — but the trajectory is clear: Africa is shaping its own AI governance models.
